Ay, I totally forgot about this blog the past week... Busy with all sorts of stuff, including celebrating!
Haha, I'm like the ultimate loner in school lor, go everywhere myself one... I dunno anyone doing math sia... But if this is consolation, there's many others i've identified who are singletons too!
Anyway, after 1 week of being hyped up about lectures and stuff, I'm finally back to my old self - sleeping in lecture. Yes that's me after all, I just can't change that...
The lectures are surprisingly not as bad as I thought, albeit the foreign accents and cute expressions. The lecturer, whose class I slept in, was the most normal speaking and professional sounding person. Strange? Or maybe strange sounding lecturers are bad bed-time story tellers...
Jwei: Sry didn't see your request for my timetable, I have 1 day left (hopefully...), Wednesday 10am Econs lecture with shuyi and 4pm Physics lecture. SLACK SLACK SLACK TMR!!

My first day in school step into lecture hall for MA2216, lecturer told us that the module is going to be a tough. Afternoon went to do some self study, but only manage to go through a few questions in the textbook because probability is really very difficult.
Second day on wednesday, is suppose to be my free day, but my group members and I have to go see prof for some project discussion. Past few days when we do our own research, we get exponentially more worried by the day because we thought the experiment is very difficult to carry out. Fortunately he told us things are very very much simpler. It was then I saw some hope for this semester.
On the same day, I held a lot of respect for the prof because he is one of the experts in the field of optics, he is extremely busy but he seems like everyday happy like that. I think I should ask him on tips about time management.
On the third day today had to wait until 4pm for my linear algebra lecture. Then straight after that is the gem2901. Saw some of my friends and feel like asking them if they are interested in finding groups, but dropped the idea. Approached the lecturer about the issue on finding groups, and he told me he will set up a forum. Thank god, another problem potentially to be solved. BUT I realise the grave mistake I made in putting two lectures together.
Tomorrow is the SPS orientation camp. I am tasked to organise a few things, but in the spate of so many events for the past 3 days, I have little things done, which means in summary I am quite screwed. The orientation ends on sunday morning, and this means I will have little time to read up in time to discuss with the optics prof during our next discussion meeting, little time for some self reading in advance of lectures, no time to do probability tutorials and more stress. I am surprised that my hair is still black.
All in all, I manage to survive the first week. Hope things will be better next week.
Hey everyone please post your first week in school! Especially yuming and kenny!!!

woah.. it's been long since i stepped into an LT once again. 3 months just seems sooo long~~ and today, i felt old. feeling damn old in the sch... being a yr 3. oh my god. o.0 i had an 8 am lecture this morning, and as usual i was late and was still waiting for bus at pgp terminal at 7.57am... so there there were many others, i presume, juniors, walking leisurely ard and talking happily like nth was goin to happen... and i was like "shit... late late late.." haha... i think those ppl still hav the jc mentality.. goin to lectures slowly and thinking tt the lecturer will wait for everyone to fill the LT before the lecture starts... hais. so yah... they are blocking my way the whole journey. slowly boarding the bus. slowly alighting. slowly climbing the stairs. omg.
first lecture was nonlinear programming. interesting lecture. more interesting lecturer. he guaranteed tt everyone will pass (get a B or B- or C) if we really WORK VERY HARD and that prob no one will get A so i guess i can bid farewell to my second upper already.
and back to pgp to slp for 1.5hours before my next lecture.
2nd lecture was basic fin math. another interesting lecturer who goes into the details of how to calculate simple interest and compound interest. again he guaranteed tt everyone will do well, but the As are for u to fight amongst urself.
so u see the paradox: hard module -> hard to get As, bcos the lecturer prob wont use a bell curve to grade u
easy module -> harder to get As, bcos the bell curve would actually make sure tt every single 0.000001 mark will make a big difference to ur grade.
hais. im upset. on the first day of sch.
today i attended lectures, copied notes and did tutorials.
weiguo: yea i'm yuming. still doing well haha! maybe suffer for the next few years in chem and bio engin in NTU. haha.
and yea.. cos 1st week dun have lab and due to national day, my 1st week is reduced to 2 days of studying ONLY hehe cant believe this is happening... Wanted to eat lunch today, but end up it's a common break... canteen totally full wonder if this will happen for the whole sem...
somehow... i ended up at home hehe
PS: JW doing "diary diary on the desk" ar???
Dear f.u.r.
Don't worry you are not alone. You can start picking up some math books and read 24/7 till your school terms starts. Zhuomin needs a self-study buddy too, so both of you can make friends and study together.
Take care that while you study math alone in depth as much as you want, you will find that math can be boring sometimes. At times you might start to think that maybe switching your career to being a Hollywood star might not be a bad choice. After all, Megan Fox is of the same age as you and she is already earning millions by every month. My suggestion is to take some breadth courses, but zhuomin has violent objection against such move, so the choice is still yours.
All in all, I am glad that you have made math your passion. While you are studying math in depth, try not to lose sight of a bigger picture. For example, while you are in your forth year furiously solving every single question from functional analysis textbook, don't forget about the analysis and linear algebra that you have learned two years ago, since the latter two are needed for functional analysis.
Anyway, wish you all the best and take care!
Yours truly
Diary

Is fish yuming?? Anyway how are you where you study and what you studying??????

Dear Diary,
School is starting. After a two and a half year hiatus, I am actually feeling excited about learning again. I feel like picking up some books right away, so that the engines in my head can finally start chugging away. I can't wait for lessons to begin. I guess I'm the only one in here who feels this way. But never in my whole life have I felt this eager to start studying again. I've spent twelve years in an education system that required me to take on peripheral subjects that gave me little breathing space to pursue what I was truly interested in. In fact, most of my time and energy had been devoted to subjects that I had little or no interest in, because they tend to be the subjects that threatened to pull my grades down. There was barely any time to explore with depth the subjects that excited me, such as mathematics. Do not get me wrong at this point - I certainly appreciate the all-rounded approach to education that has made me a better-informed and better-equipped individual. Having tried a wide array of subjects has also made me even more affirmed of where my interests and passions lie. However, as I begin my new chapter in my academic journey, the idea of being able to devote my time fully to learning mathematics really appeals to me, and I cannot help but wait in anticipation. I finally get the freedom to choose and enjoy my own favourite food, instead of being forced to eat whatever the chef dishes out today - mushrooms and all. Yes, it is that freedom which I have been yearning for, that makes university education so appealing to me. Furthermore, mathematics in university is a hell lot more exciting than everything I've learned in my twelve years of school. It is the REAL mathematics, with a significantly greater degree of abstraction and a much wider range of exciting topics that seem so daunting, and yet so intriguing! I can't wait to start school, like, now.

Okay, enough of my emo-ing. Tomorrow is going to be a really fun day. Playing badminton in the morning, then coming home to waste the day away just like what I have been doing for the past week. If any one is wondering what you can do to waste your day away, here's a suggestion. Try this interesting word-puzzle quiz http://www.weikiat.net/wicked/wickedjunior/ that should take up at least an hour?
When I feel bored again I think I will post up my complete explanation to the two envelope problem, with insights from shuyi.

oh man. i need to get a life cos every saturday i hv nth on and am rotting ard in pgp.
anw. i dun really read what junwei writes about the envelope thingy cos i just cant be bothered. hahaha... but whether u see or dun see the amount of money in the envelope makes a different to the calculation - think of conditional probability.
weiguo : probability is ok lah. altho i only got A-. haha. but when i took it, it was hosted by stats dept. it was pretty do-able even if i didnt attend the lectures. i heard that when math dept host the lecture it is harder in the sense tt there are less calculations and more proving - like thru integration and stuff , which makes it VERY dry. so GOOD LUCK!
